Poems

As I
As I am in the bathroom,
I can hear the swish-swash of the water
and the brush-brush of the toothbrush.
As I am in the train,
I can hear the woosss of the train and the boom-boom of the music,
along with french words that make up the lively train.
As I am in school,
I can hear the bang-bangs of the lockers, and the words of the students.
As I am going home,
I can hear the kaw-kaw or the seagulls, and the swish-swash of the ocean waves.

Black on Black Discrimination- Colorism & Ethnic Discrimination

Black on Black Discrimination is when an African-American make fun of each other because of many factors- skin tone, ethnicity and much more. This is very common among urban youth, when light and fair-skinned people constantly make fun of dark-skinned people, as if it is a crime to be dark-skinned. This is called colorism. Another way of black on black discrimination is when people of American descent make fun of people who are of African descent, when they are African themselves. This is a major problem in the African-American community because it brings the whole community's self-esteem down. It also seems as if the black race wants to become a White, Spanish, Asian, or Arab race when they are obviously not. The community should stop this community immediately if the black community wants to have pride and move up in life.

The iPad

This Saturday, the iPad just released. The iPad is a tablet computer made by Apple, which you can put many apps onto the computer. There seemed to have been a lot of hype about the iPad and many people have been pre-ordering the iPad for weeks, maybe months. On saturday alone, over 300,000 people have bought the iPad and the number is growing. It is expected that more than 1 million people will buy it over the next three months. For more info, click here.

Garrett Morgan

Garrett Morgan was born on March 4, 1877 in Paris, Kentucky. At the age of 14, he decided to move to Ohio to receive a better education. He moved to Cincinatti, where he quit school to work as a handyman so that he can survive. He then moved to Cleveland. In 1908, he settled down and had three sons. He also made his own tailoring business and accidentally discovered a liquid, which could be used to prepare hair for straightening. Two years later, after hearing about the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory, he invented the safety hood and smoke protector. This was a key tool in many fire disasters and World War I in the later years. Later, Morgan created his own version of the traffic light. However, the thing that was so distinctive about his was the shape. It was in the shape of a T. His products was sold throughout the US and soon became a famous millionaire. This traffic light was inspired by an accident that he witnessed. In later years, Morgan would develop glaucoma and would lose 90% of his vision. He would later die on July 27, 1963.

STEP at NYU

On Saturdays, I go to a place called STEP. It stands for the Science and Technology Entry Program. It is at NYU, which is in Greenwich Village. The program costs $120, and $120 for lunch, and this covers the whole program annually. There are a wide variety of courses for math, from Algebra to Calculus. They also have electives in many career areas and other subjects, like Business and chemistry. I would encourage everyone to come to STEP, since it is fun and in a lively environment.

bASKETBALL gAME

On Jan 29, 2010, a basketball game occurred at Monesson High School against Washington High School. During the game, two girls from different schools started arguing and soon started fighting. Soon after, the basketball players got involved. That's when the incident became dangerous. Police started to use tasers to brake the fight, however they targeted the wrong student. The victim, Mario, only wanted to get his sister, but staff targeted him as though he was the problem. A staff called a cop to assist him and tasered the innocent student. Mario was able to get away but he said after he was tasered, "I felt pain like never before". I think that this wasnt right and they shouldnt have went that far. The kids were pretty small and they could have tried to control them without using a weapon.

In Living Color

During my weekend, I watched a TV Show marathon on BET called In Living Color. It was REALLY funny. It starred Tommy Davidson, ALL of the Wayans siblings including Keenan and Damon Wayans, Jim Carrey, David Alan Grier and many others. It is a show that consists of many sketches. To me, I thought that it was very interesting in which the way they put things together and the way these sketches were thought of. I think Keenan Wayans is a genius and he is very creative. I hope everyone would be able to watch this show.

My Weekend

My weekend was pretty good, but boring. I had to fast until one o'clock and pray on Wednesday because of the fact that it was Lent. Also, I went to one of my favorite stores, Hollister, and bought a sweater for my brother. I also watched Malcolm X again for the third time. I also watched a marathon of Everybody Hates Chris and watched Drumline for the umpteenth time. I hope I have a better time for Spring Break.

NBA All-Star Weekend

This weekend was the NBA All-Star weekend. It was a good weekend. I saw the Slam Dunk contest, the Three-Point Shootout as well as the All-Star Game. My favorite part was the Slam Dunk contest, which one of my favorite players, Nate Robinson won. He is only 5'6'' and can dunk on a 10'' hoop. Paul Pierce of the Boston Celtics won the 3-point shootout. The East won the All-Star Game, which was to my liking also, since my favorite player, Dwight Howard was on the team.
